Scope note
Close-fitting cloth skullcaps, typically quilted, having a padded circlet and ear flaps which end in laces to be tied under the chin. They were worn in Medieval times under helmets and either under or over mail coifs, to prevent chafing and act as a buffer against the impact of blows.
